PINNED UNDER WATER

Lucky Escape of Man and Woman When Truck Capsizes NEITHER SERIOUSLY HURT CRASH THROUGH BRIDGE (By Telegraph—Press Association., CHRISTCHURCH, To-day. Crashing through a post and rail bridge at Helmores Road, a truck driven by Mr Sinclair Saggers, of St. Albans, came to rest upside down in the Avon River at nine o’clock last evening. Saggers and a woman friend were pinned in the truck under water, but managed to crawl out of the back and on to land. Saggers received a slight cut and minor scratches to his face, and his companion escaped with a shaking. Had it not been for the fact that the truck is equipped with high carriers and that a hood was open at the back, the consequences would have been serious.

Saggers states the accelerator jammed as he was attempting to turn to the right at the bridge entrance.
