Wanganui Again Win Champion - Service Teams’ Match

SERIES FOR KING’S PRIZE SHORT RANGE EVENTS

TRENTHAM, To-day.

Short range matches in the championship belt series for the King’s Prize - were tired at the national rifle ■meeting at Trentham this morning. A steady left wind blew across the range, but the light was good. First place in the Canterbury match, ten rounds at 300 yards, was filled by A. A. Ford (Invercargill) with 49. He receives £5. Three others dropped only one point —F. H. James (Napier), L. E. Braithwaite (Okawa) and C. J. Nix (Featherston). James and Braithwaite took £3 10s each and Nix £3. Four others took £2.'

The B grade section was won by W. N. Rummer (Opaki) with 48. Wanganui maintained its reputation for service shooting, that club’s No. I team repeating last year’s success by winning the champion service teams' match. Members of the team were: F. ! J. : Soler, C. H. Gower, J. E. Farley arid T.; L. ' Ford,' who had a grand aggregate of 541 in their service matches. The three first mentioned marksmen were in the champion team last year, Auckland City team was second with 533. ■

The winner of the' Otago match, ten rounds at 300 yards, was W. Johnson (Featherston) with 49, who takes £5 J. H. Thompson (Woodville) was second. His share of the prize money was £4.

No. 2 service match, comprising seven rounds application, ten rounds rapid and ten rounds snapshooting, all at 300 yards, was won by B. H. Nicholls with 111 out of a possible 135. Nicholls takes £3. The runner-up was W. N. Masefield (Blenheim) w'ith 110 and C. J. Nix (Featherston) was third with 110. Masefield, who collects £3, also wins the C.J. Cup for the highest score in snapshooting. Nix takes £2 and 15 others £l.

No. 3 service match comprising a tile and moving target competition, was won by F. J. Soler (Wanganui) with 73 out of a possible 80. Soler collects £4. The second prize money of £3 was collected by E. M. Wrigley (Opaki) with GO, and M. Hugo (Old Navals), who finished third with 59, received £2. Fifteen others receive £1 each.

£4—H. Simmons (Auckland City) 101. £3 each—T. Goodall (Suburbs) 101, H. H. Mclntosh (Blenheim) 101. £2 each—-L. H. Proffitt. (Napier) 99, P. Berry (Tararua) 99, H. V. Croxton (Karori) 99, D. Roots (Patea) 99.

Thirty-four others took £1 each and 14 10s each.

The winner of the B grade was C. B. Benton (Okato), who took £3. N. Mac Williams. (Invercargill) and M. Hugo (Old Navals) were second and third respectively and took £2 each.

With the ■ completion of the service matches the forty highest scorers were compiled, marksmen securing places in the service forty qualifying to shoot in the final match for the service championship.
