WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

TAWHITI MEETING HELD. The monthly meeting of the. Tawhiti Women’s Institute "was held in the Tawhiti hall on Friday. Mrs Tidswell presided over a large attendance of members. Visitors were welcomed from Turi Township and the Taiporohenui Maori Institutes.

An interesting address on her visit to Australia was given bv Mrs J. AY. Harding. At the conclusion a vote of thanks was carried by acclamation. The competition for the afternoon was a novel hand-made coat hanger. This drew a good number of entries and the judge, Mrs Harding, awarded the first prize to Mrs W. Adams. Mrs Harding remarked on the excellence of the work of all competitors.

The hostesses for the afternoon were Mrs Parker, Mrs Patterson and Mrs Moore. The tables and hall were de? corated with blooms and blue hydrangeas.

The annual report of the Okinawa Women's Institute states that meetings halve been held regularly each month, with the exception of January, it having been decided 'to hold no meeting during the busy holiday season. Eleven meetings were 'held in all. The attendance was rather erratic, but the average attendance works out to eighteen. Handwork and cooking competitions have )>een held each month and either a lecture or demonstration has been held whenever possible. In July a. highly successful social evening was arranged and funds benefitted considerably. • On September 26 the institute celebrated its first birthday. Th© advent of the festive season found members Tnisy in making toys for mental hospitals and a large box was forwarded. During the year the potato trop'hv was presented to Mrs Good, while Miss F. Sutherland received the points prize for the monthly competitions. There were five resignations during the year, membership at present being 23.
