FARMERS’ UNION MEETING

(From Our Own Correspondent)

The monthly meeting of the Awatuna branch of the Farmers’ Union was held in the Awatuna Hall on Wednesday evening, when there was a good attendance of members. The president, Mr S. Agnew, presided.

Matters in connection with the recent show were reported upon. General satisfaction was expressed at the success of the function in view of the inclement weather during the morning. The matter of holding a prize distribution social was discussed and it was resolved! finally to hold such a function on Friday, March 15. All necessary arrangements were made. Prior to the commencement of the meeting the chairman referred to a bereavement suffered by Mr H. J. Davison and a motion of sympathy was passed;, members standing in silence. GENERAL.

Since the weather broke on Wednesday of last week a total fall of 7.81 inches lias been recorded. A fall of snow on Mt. Egmont extended to Fantham’s peak.' The milk supply has also shown a sharp decline during the past week, no doubt owing to the sudden change of temperature. The members of the local hall committee and those who assisted them have finished the painting of the hall and this building now shows a greatly improved appearance. The committee thanks those others. who gatye them a. helping hand. White butterflies are very thick in the district this year and few cabbages are left. Extensive damage to swede and chou moullier crops is also reported. In connection with the white butterfly a competition open to all school children within the area of the Awatuna branch of the Farmers Union closed on the day of the show and the winners of this competition will he announced at the social. Considerable interest was taken in the competition by the children of the six schools in the area and some large tallies are expected when the counting, is finished.
