No Trace of British Vessel After Distress Calls were Sent
STORM IN MID’ATLANTIC ITALIAN SHIP FOUNDERS (British Official Wireless) Received 1 p.m. to-day. RUGBY, Feb. 27. Terrible weather is reported from tho micl-Atlantic, and grave anxiety is felt for tho British steamer Blairgowie, of 3259 tons, of Glasgow, on her way to Boston from Swansea. She sent out distress calls yesterday, declaring her situation to be desperate, with no steering gear and her hold full of water. The German liner Europa, the s.s. American Banker and the Dutch steamer s.s. Bloomeradik were this morning reported to have reached the scene, but found no trace of the vessel. The Blairgowie had 26 persons aboard. The fleet auxiliary steamer Serbol arrived at Gibraltar to-day 36 hours late, having encountered mountainous seas on the way from England, one is stated to have picked up no less than 14 distress calls during the voyage, and reports that one Italian steamer foundered near Capo Finisterre and that another vessel was abandoned.
