CHURCH GARDEN PARTY

A garden party held in -Mr and Mrs A. H. Christie’s home, Manaia,, in aid of St. Andrews Church, was a great success both in attendance and financially. The weather was fine for the beginning, but later in the afternoon rain commenced: and several competitions .were abandoned as were various games of croquet, tennis and other competitions. Splendid business was done at thej, various stalls. The results of the competitions were: Bell croquet, Mr J. M. Clague; skallywag, Mrs G. Innes; croquet, Master J. Clague; names of flowers, Mrs P. Instone. GENERAL. Tlie members of the Manaia platoon of the Taranaki Regiment returned to Manaia from Waipukurau camp on Saturday niglft. A junior life-saving club has been formed by members of the Manaia Scout troop. The team has had practices at Kaupokonui beach and is doing good woyk. . _ The Waimate "West County Council picnic, which was to have been held at Kaupokonui beach last Saturday was postponed on account of the inclemency of the weather. The annual scout service was held last Sunday in St. Andrews Church, about 50. comprising Guides, Brownies, Scouts and Cubs being present. The parade marched from the town hall to the church. Rev. R. Miller presided, and! his sermon was on loyalty, friendliness and cheerfulness. PERSONAL. Mr John O’Connell, farmer of Hamilton, was on a week-end visit to Manaia and was the guest of Mr and Airs E. Long. Mr O’Connell returned to his home yesterday.
