Large shearing tallies are occasionally reported from Australia ’. Ai correspondent states that the largest tally of slieep-sliearing in the Ashburton Gorge was done by Thomas Lester, of Kaiapoi, who got through 212 sheep in hours. The animals were well shorn and had Lester been pushed he could have increased his score. * * * * *
One of the most remarkable features in connection with the Soudan War has not yet, so far as we are aware, been publicly commented upon. We refer to the fact that, whenever a distinguished officer falls in an engagement, it is discovered he has a second cousin, or some other relation, living at Wanganui. Wo fully anticipate that if anything happens to the Mahdi it will be found that he has left a bereaved mother-in-law in that town to lament his loss.
A correspondent of the Wellington Post- propounds the following as a cure for drunkenness. “Abolish all licenses and Customs duties, and it is done. If soirits were sold at their real value, it would) not pav to keep bars open to retail them. Nobody would be so foolish as to give sixpence for a thimbleful at a bar when the same would buy a bottleful at the fruit shops. . . .”
