A meeting of business people in i>ew Plymouth who had suffered losses through the recent Hood decided last night to ynake application to the Government for financial assistance. It was stated at the meeting that in some cases the losses were so severe that it would be impossible to carry on without assistance. A committee of ten was appointed to conduct negotiations with the Government, being given a free hand by the meeting. A request for a direct grant,, rather than a loan, was iayoured and arrangements were set in motion to obtain the information necessary to support the petition. Criticism of the sufficiency of the outlet for surplus waters in the Mangao tuku and Huatoki streams was also offered and the borough council is to be requested to take all step 3 possible (o prevent a recurrence,
