SWIMMING TITLES

AUCKLAND WIN THE SHIELD

PEATS OF 17-YEAR-OLD GIRL

WINNER OF TWO DIVISIONS

(By Telegraph—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, Fob. 20

A splendid victory by Miss Edna Rainey in the 100 yards women’s freestyle, the success of Miss Judith Mobster in the 220 yards women’s breaststroke, the Auckland team’s win in the 500 yards flying squadron relay and the water polo final secured the retention of the Yaldhurst Shield by Auckland at the New Zealand swimming championships, to-night. -

The home team’s score was increased in every race' except the 440 yards men’s free style, the total being 59 points. The: scores of other centres were: Otago 25, Canterbury 14, Southland 12, South Auckland 10, Wellington 8, Hawkes May 6. Wanganui 5, Taranaki 1. The 440 yards men’s contest resulted in a decisive win by six yards for the Canterbury champion, D. H. Symes. The runner-up was R. Simon (South Auckland) and R. Watkins (Hawkes Bay) was third. The only Aucklander to qualify for the final'was N. Crump and, after being to the fore for the greater part of the distance, he lost his strength and finished a poor last. Symes’ time of 5.21, while creditable for him, was 7 3-5 slower than G. Bridson’s New Zealand record.

Miss Rainey’s success roused tremendous enthusiasm among the large crowd. She was the youngest contestant, being only 17 years of age. Not a month ago she won the Dominion intermediate girls’ championship at Timaru. She is the first girl to win the title of both divisions in the same season.

Southland’s representatve, Miss Nancy Basstian, fulfilled the expectations that the Auckland girls would find her difficult to beat. She filled second place and was only a foot away. Miss Rainey’s time, 65 4-5, was the fastest in which the title has been Avon, but it was slower than her NeAV Zealand intermediate record of 65 1-5, which she registered last season.

By her victory in the women’s breaststroke, Miss Judith Webster (Auckland) retained this title for the third consecutive year. She won easily from her only opponent, Miss Jean Thompson (Auckland), and the lack of keen competition probably accounted for the slowness of her time,

3.30 2-5, in comparison with her record of 3.23 3-5.
