At a meeting of t 'cl- provisional directors of the Opunake Dairy Factory, it was decided to extend the time for the receipt of applications for shares until March 6. Although over 600 shares have been applied for the directors think it desirable to float a large number, proceeding further. * * * * ■
Great martial enthusiasm prevailed in New Zealand on the receipt of knowledge that war had been declared in the Soudan. Offers of troops are being received by the Government from all over the colony.

Sir Samuel Baker, ex-Governor of the Soudan, stated in London that to fling away the Soudan was to fling away the granary of the world. To abandon Khartoum would be to surrender what would * the richest entrepot in the world. If the Soudan were in English lands, in a very few years England would be entirely independent of the United States for both cotton and corn.
