UNUSUAL CIRCUMSTANCE
DEATH OF MAN AND WIFE. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) NELSON, Jan. 17. The death last night of Charles George Withers, Hira, was followed by that of Mrs Withers early this morning. Both of them had been failing in health for several months and their deaths were not unexpected, but it was an unusual circumstance that the husband and his wife should die the same night ,the widow not knowing of the death of her husband the preceding evening. Mr Withers was a son of the late Mr John Withers, who came to Nelson from Somerset in the early years of settlement. Mr Withers was horn at Nelson 73 years ago. near what is now Queen's Gardens. Two years later his parents removed to a farm at Hira. Xn 1886 he married Jessie Louisa Gill, a daughter of the late Mr V . Gill, another early settler in the district. She and her husband commenced farming on a property adjoining her father’s homestead. Mr and Mrs Withers were highly respected in the district. They are survived by three daughters, Miss L. Withers and Mrs A. Rutland (Nelson) and Mrs Chesnye Hyne (Christchurch).
