Members of the teachers’ summer •school at New Plymouth yesterday availed themselves of an opportunity of going by launch around the historic parts of the port. In the course of a cruise a visit was made to Aloturoa Island, or Tall Island, where on the seaward side was found the remains of the cavern home of Dick Barrett, E. J. Wakefield, nephew of Col. Wakefield, Dr Dorsett and Dr Dieffen"bach. Fearing the menacing attitude of the warring Waikato tribes of 1839 they made there a home. It was from this point that Dr Dieffenbach left to make the first ascent of Mt. Egmont. Heading seaward the excursionists were given a close-up view of Whnre Umu, or Lion Rock, with the const in the background extending as far as ilie eye could see. Gradually the party came under the shadows of Saddle Back, Motuinahanga or Double Island. Despite the hard rock and precipitous nature of the island the natives converted Saddle Back into a refuge. Areas for small av.li are shelters were hewed out of the rock and food pits dug with stone implements.
