INTERESTING STAGE REACHED
ERSKINE IN GOOD POSITION. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, To-day. In an unfinished game in the sixth and final round of the New Zealand chess tourney this morning Severne (Nelson) who was playing Erskine (Southland) resigned on the 81st move and left Erskine with nine points for the Dominion honour. Erskine began his final game with Gyles (Wellington) this afternoon. The position at that stage was that Erskine, with nine points, had to beat Gyles or draw with him to win the championship, as Gyles had eight points at the commencement of play. Beyer (Wellington) with all his games completed, has eight and .i-half points and he cannot win the Dominion title, but if Erskine beats Gvles, Beyer will he runner-up by half a point. If on the other hand Gyles beats Erskine, these two players will he level in points and a play-off .vill he necessary, with Beyer in third place. Gyles to win the championship has to beat Erskine two games running.
