Patea Play Reading

A combined display of work and a social afternoon was held last Friday for the monthly meeting of the Patea Women’s Institute.

Mi ss W. Kenwortliy (vice-president) presided in the absence of the president (Mrs W. H. Walton). Mrs D. Roots (sick visitor for the month) read a note of apology from Mrs Walton, who sent greetings to the members. Mrs Roots was presented with a dainty bouquet to take to Mrs Walton with the members’ best wishes for her speedy recovery. Mrs J. Pearce (vice-president) who had been an inmate of the Patea hospital for some time past, was also presented with a bouquet and Mrs A. A. Carey (secretary) received a bouquet in appreciation of her splendid work. During the afternoon two plays were presented by the members of the drama circle, namely, “Cats’ Claws,” with Misses Marian Hamertibn, Marian Gibbings and Freda Hemingway in the east, and the winning entry at the recent drama festival, “Such is Fame” with Mesdames A. Maxwell, C. Masters and Misses F. Hemingway and M. Hamerton. , At the conclusion of the plays Mrs Sheild and Mrs Simmons, who had judged the entries in the display of work, complimented the exhibitors and said their task had been somewhat .difficult owing to the higli standard of work. Mrs Sheild then presented the prizes as follows: Most artistic article. Mrs C. V. Herbert 1 and 2; most thrifty article, Miss L. Adams 1, Mrs W. Ingley 2; best finished article, Mrs A. A. Carey 1, Miss R. Locker 2. A prize for the member; with the greatest number of exhibits was won by Mrs O. V. Herbert. Mrs J. A. Wither was the winner of a competition for the best article not costing more than Is. Afternoon tea was served in the supper room.
