Successor to Woodfull
It seems to be taken for granted that W. M. Woodfull will not he seen again in the State XI, though he will continue to play for Carlton. Carlton last week received a letter from Woodfull thanking the club for its congratulations on winning the Ashes, and saying that he was looking forward to being with the club again. H., Collins has been appointed' provisional captain of Carlton. Woodfull, of course, could easily play in the Melbourne Shield matches without requiring leave from the Education Department, because the games take place in the Christmas vacation. It is merely a question of whether he has the inclination. In the absence of a statement from him, the selectors will probably include him in the State team and put the onus on him to drop out. If Woodfull definitely retires, W. H. Ponsford is regarded as the next Victorian captain. On the few occasions when Ponsford has led the State team he has: done well. He is regarded by Victorian club cricketers as a very shrewd cricketer. He handled the howling extremely well when he captained a Victorian side on the (Melbourne Cricket Ground a year or two ago.
