In spite of the arduous ten or twelve hours of daily effort by motion picture companies, three minutes of completed film is the top average of daily producton. This fact was revealed by Wesley Ruggles, who directed Paramount’s "Thank Your Stars,” featuring Jack Ckikie, Dorothy Dell and Ben . Bernie and his band. "We take between 2500 and 3500 feet of film a day,” says Ruggles, "or the equivalent of about half an hour of running film, but in the end this footage is deduced to about three minutes of accepted scenes.” 1

G. W. Pabst, one of the greatest living German film directors, who was responsible for "Kamaradschaft,” "Westfront 1918,” and "Don Quixote,” amongst other famous pictures, is now working in Hollywood,- having been exiled from his* native laud for some time. His example is but one of many others.
To-day there are few film stars left in Berlin whose names spelt- out in electric lights can be relied upon to attract the crowds that, before the advent of Hitler, flocked to see German pictures. Willy Fritseh, Kathe von Nagy, Brigittee Helm, Camilla Horn—these artists have their following. The rest are unknown in England and America, two of Germany’s most profitable export countries prior to the Nazi regime.

Consequently, the failure of the German companies to supply a sufficient number of attractions has led to the importation of a bigger percent* ge_ of films from abroad.
