Royal Visit to Hawera
Duke of Gloucester's Itinerary STAY OF TWENTY MINUTES Arrangements and details in connection with the visit of the Duke of Gloucester to Hawera in the New Year are embodied in a letter received to-day from the Minister of Internal Affairs by the Mayor of Hawera, Mr J. EL Campbell. The letter states that His Royal Highness will arrive at Hawera by rail from New Plymouth at 12.30 p.m. on Thursday, January 3, 1935, and will depart for Wanganui at 12.50 p.m. the same day. j The gathering of local and district school children has always been featured in previous visits, stated the letter, and it was specially desired on this occasion. The Government was at present giving consideration to the payment of fares of at least some children, probably from Standard 111 upwards, and further information would be forwarded as early as possible regarding that matter. In the mean- ! time, it was decided that the cost of | transport of children who were unable Ito 'return to their homes on the same I day would not be entertained. ( The Government felt sure that it j was the desire of the Council to tender a fitting welcome to the Royal guest, [and in this connection the Council was [invited to submit a draft programme of proposals for the reception. The Government would subsidise and arrange for the realisation of any reasonjable expenditure in connection with the visit. The Government had decided that on this .occasion local authorities would not be asked to provide illuminations.
