VALPEEN’S WIN IN STEEPLES CUP TO PRINCESS DOREEN PUNOHESTOWN WINS ENFIELD. (By Telegiapn —Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. 14. The Canterbury Jockey Club’s Grand National meeting opened to-day. The weather was .fine and the track in splendid order. The attendance was th© best on (xmn<l N&tionfil o«iy for some years. Totalis at or investments were ±.«L,(OS 10s (win, £15,010; place, £22,758 10s) against £34,296 last year. Results are: TRIAL HURDLES. Of £175. One and three-quarter miles. 5- Emotion, 9.13 (Mcßae) 1 8-9 Brigadore, 9.0 (Trillo) -■ I- Blacksmith, 10.3 (McDonald) 3 Also stairted: 6-5 Gold Knight 10.1, 2-2 Verden 9.12, 7-7 Revision 9.9, 9-8 Fleeting Glance, 4-4 Transact 9.5, 3-3 Sunward 9.0. Verden and Blacksmith led for the first half-mile from Rngadoro, Emotion, Gold Knight and Fleeting Glance. They held their lead oni to the course proper, but once over the last fence Brigadore and Emotion led from Blacksmith and Verden. In a. close finish Emotion beat Brigadore by a head, with Blacksmith four lengths away. Verden was fourth. Time, 3.121-5. PAPARUA HANDICAP. Of £2OO. Six furlongs. 4-4 Mobile, 8.9 (L. J. When the course proper was reached the most prominent were Mobile, Royal Sceptre, Copyist, Cranford, Quietly and Might Mobile stayed on and won by a length from Copyist, with Might a head away. Emissary led on to the course proper, but at the distance Top Rank led from Eimissary, Braw Lad, Travenna, Trumpet Blast, Rebel Chief, Wino and Silver Step. lop Rank was not troubled and won by a length and a-half from Trumpet Blast. Braw Lad was a head away. Silver Step was fourth. Time, 1.15 3-5.
JUMPERS’ FLAT HANDICAP. Of £l6O. One and a-half miles. 11-11 Hounslow, 9.9 (Pascoe)... 1 7- Free Air, 9.5 (Mcßae) 2 2-3 Himtique, 9.0 (Drinkwater) 3 Also started : 6-6 Mount Boa 10.8, 1- Royal Lineage 9.9, 3-2 Arcade 9./, 4-4 Invictus 9.6, 10-9 Henry of Navarre 9.0, 9-10 Starshooter 9.0, 5-5 Royal Limond 9.0, 8-8 Chile 9.0. Invictus and Arcade led out ot the straight- from Hounslow, Starshooter and Free Air. Passing the mile Arcade and Invictus were followed by b-tar-shooter, Hounslow, Rloyal Lineage, Henry of Navarre, Free Air and Huntique. Crossing the top Arcade and Starshooter were still in the lead from Royal Lineage. Hounslow, Huntique, Chile, Fre Air,* Mount Boa and Royal Limond. Starshooter was first into the straight, with Arcade, Royal Lineage, Huntique, Hounslow and _ Free Annext. Hounslow drew out in the run home and won by a length from Free Air, with Huntique a length and a-half away. Chile was fourth. Time, 2.37 2-5. GRAND NATIONAL STEEPLECHASE. Of £IOOO. Three and a-half miles. 4-3 Valpeen, 10.0 (Peart) 1 8- Mem'bo, 9.2 (Beale) 2 1-1 Billy Boy, 11.13 (Thompson) 3 Also started: 5-5 Callamart 10.13, 2- Thurina 10-11, 3-2 Riotous 10.11, 9-9 Valves 9.0, 10-10 Umtali. 8-7 Barrington 9.0, 6-6 Peterette 9.0. Barrington and Valpeen led the field round the first circuit and as the speed was slow all horses safely negotiated all the jumps. Passing the stands the second time Valpeen was two lengths clear of Barrington with Thurina and Billy Boy next. Thurina went up to Valpeen at Cutts’, hut made a faulty iunip. Here Valves fell. Valpeen and Thurina were clear of Barrington, Billy Boy Riotous and Membo at the kennels double. Riotous fell at the top sod wall, and Membo moved up fast crossin"- the to]). Thurina led to the i top brush, but faulted on landing, leaving Valpeen to jump the last fence clear of Membo, Barrington and Billy Bov. In a close finish Valpeen stayed on to beat Membo by a neck. Billy Boy was six lengths' away. Barrington was fourth. Time, 7.-5.
ENFIELD STEEPLECHASE. Of £2OO. About two miles. 5- Punehestown, 10.11 (Langford) 1 6- Ourrajong, 9.14 (Nicol) ... 2 3-4 Kapuna, 10.13 (Peart) 3 Also started : 1-1 Taura Imd 10.3, 2-2 Night Club 9.7, 4-3 Willow Glen 9.6 7-7 Andy 9.0. Ourrajong led over the stand double from Andy, Taura Lad, Ivapuna., Willow Gien. Punehestown and Night Club. Willow Glen tipped his rider at Cutts’. and after passing the first sod wall Ourrajong was followed by Taura. Lad. Kapuna. Andy, Punehestown and v ight Club. The last-named fell at the second fence of the kennels double. Ourrajong still led to the top brush, but approaching the last fence ! Punehestown went to the front and | won easily by three lengths from Cur-ji-ajong, with Kapuna a similar distance lawav. Taura Lad was fourth. Time, 3.53.

Palermo and Slippery piloted the field across the top and were followed into the straight by Bay Princess Doreen, Davolo, ldmbohm, Southdown and Giggieswiek. Princess Doreen led at the distance and won by a length and a-half from Davolo, with Limbohm a length away. Bay, Tree was fourth. 'Time, 1.394-5. AVONHEIAD HANDICAP. Of £IBO. Seven furlongs.
