FAMINE FACED

I~)URING the past IS months large numbers of refugees from Turkestan have been going over the border to Meshed, Persia, driven from their own country by the famine prevailing there. In some cases the remaining members of whole tribes have gone over. All the refugees’ flocks and herds have gone, and they arrived at Meshed completely destitute. Approximately .“>O,OOO people have entered Persia, and the Persian 'Government have been steadily drafting them away from the border and settling them in various undeveloped places in the interior. The sufferings of these people in their long marches were considerable, and they in some cases arrived at their destination shoeless and almost naked. The American Mission in Meshed has done all that is possible to provide the most needy with some sort of clothing when starting out from Meshed, but supplies have not been altogether adequate, and the refugee guards have in somo cases mot scrupled to take away tho poor supplies given to the destiture. Whatever their sufferings may have been in Persia, their condition is now far better than in their own country.
