DAIRY INDUSTRY FIGURES
FARMERS’ uivION STATEMENT,
■COMMENT BY N.D.A. IOHATRiMAN
Tlie New Zealand Farmers’ Union had attempted to induce the .Government to come to the rescue of the dairyindustry, said Mr A. Morton, chairman of the N.D.A. conference at. New Plymouth yesterday-, but he thought that in talcing that step the union had gone further than was wise. He referred to the publication of an article in the journal published by- the union, in which it was stated that the executive had approved of the policy- speech of the president, Mr W. .T. Poison, M.P., and therefore it must be assumed that the speech expressed the views of the union. In his speech Mr Poison had referred to the pay-out of the Midhirst TJairyCo. as being 8.773 d per lb for the season 1932-33 and 7d for 1933-34. Inquiryhad shown that for the 1932-33 season IO.OGd per lb had been paid, while for the past season it was probable that 8,58 d for butter-fat and 2.46 d for casein would be paid, or a total of 11.06 d. It would be seen therefore that the payout would be rather better than last y-ear. Mr iMorton said he thought that statements and figures given publicity in aul of the dairy industry should be very- carefully cheeked. Otherwise they were likely to reflect upon those they- were intended to assist.
