INVERCARGILL, May 7. The shipping service between Melbourne and Bluff and its reinstatement in November were considered at a meeting to-day of representatives of the Southland League, the Invercargill Chamber of Commerce and the Bluff Harbour Board. It was decided by the meeting to send the following telegram to the- Union Steam Ship Company and to despatch copies to the Prime Minister and the Postmaster-General asking for their support: “A meeting of representatives of local authorities interested in the South Isl a n d-Melbourne. passenger service was held to-day and, while the meeting appreciated your announcement that the Maheno will be operating in the service, unanimous disappointment was expressed) that arrangements l were not being made for the reinstatement of the .service at an earlier date in view of the many important events taking place, including the opening of the cente'narv celebrationis and the Melbourne Cup race. “Interested local authorities ot Southland strongly urge the commencement of the service in September. They would also urge * your f a vourable consideration of including Hobart as a port of call in the service, as apparently it. is only a matter of applying to the Commonwealth Government for a service to operate for passenger traffic on this section of the run.
