EGMONT WINTER RACES

OPENING DAY FIELDS POBM CHE THE. CANDIDATES RiBVIEfW: BY “LIMITED” With every prospect of a bumper meeting, the Egmont Racing Club opens its winter fixture to-morrow. With the exception of the Steeplechase, and the Flying and Mcßae Handicaps, fields are of such dimensions that betting "will take a. wide range and fortunate backers, are likely to. be reward, ed with, good dividends. Most of the visiting horses from a distance which were accepted for have arrived, leaving only the New Plymouth and Stratford horses, who are due to-day. A matter for regret is that the popular Hanvera (steeplechaser Copey is unlikely to fulfil his engagement, as a.fter schooling brilliantly yesterday morning his leg filled badly and his owner-trainer despairs of having his services.

The programme as follows opens at 11.45 with, the —•

The list comprises one of the biggest fields that have contested a hurdle race in Hawera for some years and includes a. number of useful performers. Distinction is lent to the field by the topweight, Hounslow, last year's Grand National Hurdles 'winner. Hounslow has done no hurdle racing since his triple success at Biocarton August," but jumped splendidly in a schooling bout yesterday. He may be in want of a race, but looks like being a prominent figure in to-morrow's race: High Faintin’ is another who may be expected to improve with racing. Brown Abbey is better seasoned, but is likely to be reserved for the steeplechase. Consent's performance at Marton was not attractive, but Esteem is showing improvement and should be prominent. Million is a .seasoned horse; and has run well lately. She stays; well andi will be fancied. Pahu has yet to show a return to form. Taranaki racegoers will remember St. Aimes: who performed so well at New Plymouth and Stratford. She is in particularly .well. True Shaft, Lebanon, Richfield and Monaghan are newcomers, while Chief Line, Don Erma andi Stanchion will'have to show improvement. A good dividend looks quite on the cards and Esteem, Million andi Hounslow may be fancied'.

A rare puzzle is set here with Pheon, Sea Fox, Pfiiakuo, Cawbeen, Matami; and. Chief Marionette all with credentials, while Cowan Lea, Ingenuity and Sandlark look possibilities; for securing., a' pl'acg. Most demand may be for Sea Fox, Matomi and Cawbeen.

'The fopweight is a comparatively young horse for a steeplecha.se, but hisj showing at Ellerslie at Faster time, over the tricky Ellerslie country, was; impressive and he will be greatly fancjed to-morrow. Manuiri has; performed well over hurdles, carrying within a, pound of 12. Qto victory. With 10.1 the Hawera. country should have no terrors for him. Oopey is unlikely to start, but Biwru Abbey, who finished! second to Riotous at Ellerslie, and Royal Lirnond will be interesting competitors. Bon Aryan is usually a safe fencer and his accident yesterday was ascribed to a passing train distracting his attention. Sir Musk and No Humbug have th<Nr reputations still to make.' The order of hacking may be Riotous, Manuiri and Brown Abbey.

FLYING HANDICAP. Otf £l2O. Six furlongs

Of the eight horses carded, half a dozen can be classed as good secondclass sprinters. Nothing in the race has a prohibitive weight and a firstclass contests looks certain. British Columbia is in great form, while Orn.par’s supporters will not hear of defeat. Oarfex, although out of his distance, can be relied on to run out a solid race if started. Cullus is brilliant, bub none of the contestants is as brilliant as The Tiger, who has been showing signs of returning to his best form. Protomint w'ould be preferred over a longer course. Royal Bengal has not shown form recently. Diagano should run well. Favouritism may be divided between Ora pa i, Briti sh Col umbia and The Tiger.

This is, another punters’ puzzle, with Princess Star, Solomon, Hybiscus, De Trop. Arauline andl Cawbeen suggesting themselves. Support will be accorded Solomon, Hybiscus and Arau-

Lady> Spy ran Good Hunting to a neck at Pahiatu'a on the first day, but disappointed on the concluding day. Gibraltar has not shown impressive form in bis recent races and the stable mav rely oti< R.uri, who is looking and working well. The game little Chopin loots in capital bodily health, and lie likes the Hawera tracks. Chopin rap. a good, race at Pahiatua. on Saturday

after being galloped on. His injury, lioAvever, is not serious as lie worked freely this morning. Alloy does not appeal, but Prince Colpssms must bo given a great chance, as; ho is a bold galloper and good stayer. Richfield has lost his dash and nothing, is known of Great Emblem, who has not raced for some time. This leaves the upsetter to bo Round Table, who will have some friends on the day. The order of favouritism may he Ruri, Prince Colossus and Chopin.

TAWHITE HACK. Of £IOO. Seven furlongs

The topweight has not been working so attractively as he did before contracting a coid that kept him mu, of the Easter racing. Gay Court is a likely one and St. Clara, on her home course will be greatly fancied. Silk Sox, Prince Reno, Lady Ronald and Tves Sec will, all have partisans, and in a good be trine: race most inquired for may be St. Clara, Gay Court and Lady Ronald.
