UNITED ODD BOYS BEATEN. NOWELL IN KICKING FORM. . High scoring was a feature ox >» bright game between Hawera and United Old Boys at Stratford, the former winning. by 25 points (five converted tries) to 16 (three tries, one converted, aiid one penalty goal). Hawera had the advantage throughout the game, and were superior in both backs And forwards. The amber and blacks secured the ball from the majority of serums, and Dymond repeatedly sent his backs away in sparkling runs. Nowell, the Hawera full back, was In licking form, and converted all of the five tries. The teams were:

Play fluctuated between the twenty-fives in fast, hard forward rushes, and Old Boys were close to scoring, when the Hawera forwards cleared in a snappy passing run. A spectacular cut in by Dymond paved the way for Hawera’s second try, and Brown took a clean pass to go- over between the uprights. Nowell made no mistake witlj the kick. —Hawera 10, Old Boys 0Qld Boys launched a succession of attacks that had Hawera hard put to maintain an adequatje defence, and their opportunity came when Dowdle was penalised directly In front of the goal. Adlam took the kick and scot, ed an easy three points.—Hawera 10, Old Boys 3. An enterprising run by the backs gave Old Boys their second try. Lash cut in to hand on to Cook, who trains ferred to Adlam. the latter scoring well out under a double tackle. He converted from a difficult angle.—Hawera 10, Old Boys 8. Old Boys made the pace in the early stages of the second spell, and Heath crossed the line, only to be recalled for a five yards scrum. Hammond cleared in a spectacular run and sent Brown away in a dash for the line. Brown showed a turn of speed that / left the defence standing and he scored between the posts. Nowell’s conversion was a trifle lucky, the ball bouncing on the bar.—Hawera 15, Old Boys 8.

Again Old Boys pressed HaweTa on their line, and a very lucky “speculator’’ by Hunter saved an almost certain try. Hawera worked downfield in a loose forward rush, and the backs then swung into action. N. Hunter cut in to hand on to Dowdle, who finished a sound run by scoring handy to the uprights. Again Nowell converted. — Hawera 29, Old Boys 8.

After F. Adlam had failed twice with penalty kicks. A. D. Adlam was given an opportunity and he added three points without difficulty.—Hawera 20. Old Boys 11. Playing an opportunist game, Cook made the opening for Old Boys to again score, and from a scramble at tno corner AValker dived over. A. Adlam converted.—Hawera 20, Old Bovs 16. ‘

In a sparkling movement instituted bv Dymond the Hawern. backs handled very pouncfiy, but Dowdlo and Hammond held up just short of the line.
