MID-WEEK RUGBY

SOUTH TARANAKI COMPETITION. CITY CLUB’S ANNUAL MEETING. At the annual meeting held in Hawera last evening of the City Rugby Football Club (Wednesday competition there were present 14 members. Mr P. F. Raynor (president) occupied the chair. In pre'sentjng the annual report and balance-sheet for the 1933-34 season the president congratulated the dub on a very gratifying position, tooth from a playing and financial viewpoint. The balance-sheet showed receipts amounting- to £3O 0s Bd, while the expenditure was only £l7 2s lid, thus creating a balance of £l2 17s 9d to the club’s credit. This position was brought about largely by a competition held for a. cushion' donated' by Mr McMasters, and toy the success of the club’s annual dance, the sums of £2 15s 8d and £5 19s respectively being raised and providing the means for purchasing players’ jerseys. Another gratifying feature was the prompt payment by playing members of their annual subscription and insurance levy. There were only two defaulters and the president heartily congratulated the dub’s honorary, - secretary on his success in placing the finances in such a sound position. During the season the club played 13 matches, winning eight, drawing four and losing one—a most creditable performance when the difficult task of assembling a team on Wednesday was considered. Points scored were 113 for and 53 against. Of the 113 points scored for the club, E. Hart accounted for 63 and congratulations were extended to him on his fige exhibition of football during the season. The Elgar Cup and Gibson Baimer were completed for and won bv the club, which was some compensation at least for its defeat by the Okaiawa juniors in the semi-final of the Taranaki junior championship. Til© score. 21—0, was scarcely a fair indication of the merits of "the two teams in the game, but the club l had to acknowledge the superiority of the Okaiawa players and extended to them congratulations on their fine play. The .use of the gymnasium in Princes Street for training was greatly appreciated by the players and the thanks of the Hub were due to the Hawera Borough Councvil for placing such a fine building at the disposal of the Hubs for that purpose. The club had to convey its sincere thanks to the coach (Mr B. Johnson) and to all those who had helped in any way towards the success of the season, special mention being made of the work of Mr E. Trigger as club captain and Mr Lt. Waishj who acted as gatekeeper. The Press also was thanked ( for its- reports pf competition games, and the Hawera Borough Council for the use of a. room for meetings. The motion was seconded and the report and balance-sheet adop>ted without discussion.

Several new playing -members were elected and it- was reported that there seemed every prospect this season of sufficient teams being available in the district to -continue the Wednesday competition, on the same- lines as hitherto.
