The well-known judge and breeder, Mr craig Tanner, has completeu the purchase in Britain of the yearling Hereford bull, Paunton James. Tile purchase was made on behalf of the well-known Gisborne breeders, Messrs. Hutchinson Bros., whose herd is one of the foremost m the Dominion today, having scored many notable successes at the New Zealand Royal and other North Island shows. Some years ago, Messrs. Hutchinson Bros, paid 1000 guineas for the Hereford bull, Royal Navy, and have shown outstanding enterprise in securing Paunton Janies, as the landed cost of this bull, fully insured' at Gisborne, will also involve something like a four.igure outlay. Negotiations have been ;n train for some time on behalf of Messrs. Hutchinson 8r05.., to secure the best Hereford bull that could be, bought in England, and it is inter-1 esting to note that Mr Tanner, who, has judged both in North and South j America, as well as having bred many t notable champions in England, was - able to outbid both Argentine and - United States bidders for Paunton 1 James, who, in view of his outstanding individual merit in addition to his regal breeding, should prove an importation of very great value to New Zealand.
Advice has also been received from New York that an outstanding Polled Hereford bull claimed to be the .best of his age in the United States has been shipped for Mr Fred Humphreys, of Gisborne, who was the pioneer importer of Polled Hereford cattle to New Zealand. Accompanying this bull on the City of Canberra is an in-calf Polled Hereford heifer for Mr It. W. Matthews, of Waiorongomai, Featherston. This heifer is closely related to Mr Humphreys’ first imported bull, Royal Gem, who has sired to many outstanding animals in New Zealand, including the yearling bull which was sold for the record auction price for the Dominion at the recent Royal Show at Auckland of 190 guineas, and also of a two-year-old bull which was sold some months ago for export to] Victoria for Ifs -■ guineas. ’ . In a following shipment an outstanding Polled bull will also be forwarded to the order .of Mr R. . Matthews. 'According to the illustra-j tions forwarded of these cattle and their immediate - ancestors, m combin-1 atiou with their outstanding breeding | merit thev should" undoubtedly prove of oreat interest to Hereford breeders throughout New Zealand as well as decided acquisitions to the herds lor which they are being imported.
