LOAN CONVERSION SCHEME

The -Hawera County Council’s loan conversion plan was advanced a. further .stage at the monthly meeting of the council t-o-dav when recommendations hy the clerk (Mr J. W. Harding) foutlie conversion of the major loans were adopted. There were [invent CVs. J. H. j .Murdoch (chairman), T. A. Winks, L. A. Wa.sthor, W. Rotlieiry. A. G. La.rconi, J. Lauder and A. E. Death. The clerk stated that the total, loans amounted to £88,327, including a umber of State Advances loans, which wore automatically extinguished at- the end of the. term.’ These- would not he brought under the conversion .scheme. As a. result of inefficient sinking fund rates and the reduced earning power of die funds, several of the other loans would In' short jn amounts at maturity dates. A loan of £61.500 repayable in 1038 would have a shortage ol £2-1.800. a sum of £6BOO due in 1956 would be approximately £1490 slioit, a £3OOO loan due in 1941 would be £1284 short and a loan of £10,500 due in 1946 would be £4,400 short. Under :he provisions of the conversion scheme the difficulties of the shortages could oe overcome. The council considered the scheme as it- applied to the various loans and instructed the clerk to proceed with the necessary steps for its completion. The inclusion of the Nofmanbv outer area- in the county would be effective from April 1, reported the clerk, and particulars of the area to be included would shortly be gazetted. It was decided to co-operate with the Hawera Borough Council in metalling portion of the South Road opposite the snleyards, providing half the cost- is borne and that nose-in parking is allowed.

ENGINEER’S REPORT. The Allan Road from the Meremere school to Mr Williams | property had had d sealing coat of bitumen applied, reported the engineer (Mr A. Muggeridge). It was three years since this was first grouted with one coat. The Main South R.oad at Mokoia had lieen attended to where the bitumen way hare, and one bend had been straightened on the Manawapou Hill. 'Die Meremere Road, had had a coat of bitumen where required. A. had place on the road that had broken away would be attended to as 6oon as the highway funds were available. The Noonan Hill on this side of the bridge had been sealed with bitumen, and there were lengths on the other side of the bridge that would he attended to a s soon as the. new bridge was finished. The erection of the Noonan bridge was going on satisfactorily. It was fonud necessary to put a small land span on this end of the bridge, as the filling would be too great for the piers to carry. By doing this a lot of timber would be saved and an enormous amount of filling. The Katqtaura

The Tangahoe tunnel was nearing completion and would be finished in about three weeks. The deviation at the Tangahoe was going on steadily. The cut was nearly through the big hill at the commencement of the iob. The filling and cutting on the Whareroa Road were being blinded with dust from the crusher, and this should give a good smooth coat for the winter. The work of metalling the various roads authorised at last meeting would be gone on with as soon as it was possible to work the pit, as neither the lorries nor the men were available ah the present time.
