SWIMMING AT HAWERA

CARNIVAL EVENTS CONTESTED. BLYTH BREAKS BSO YARDS RECORD. There -was a largo attendance ol spectators at the Hawera baths last evening, when the Hawera Amateur Swimming Club conducted ail interclub carnival in perfect summer weather. Conditions were conducive to good times, and stirring finishes were fought out between Hawera and visiting swimmei'6. A feature of the carnival was the record-breaking swim of J. Blyth (Hawera,, who in the men’s 880 yards Taranaki championship outstripped all opposition to win comfortably and clip 19 2-ssec off the previous record of 13min 21 4-ssec, established in salt water by H. St. George (Waitara). The intermediate boys’ Taranaki diving championship was also decided and resulted in a win for N. Turnbull (Stratford), with M. Chadwick (Hawera), four points behind, second.

In a water polo match the Hawera ladies’ team defeated Inglewood ladies by three goals to one. Play was even during tne first spell, but in the second spell only consistent play by the Inglewood goalkeeper kept the score from mounting. Goals were scored for Hawera by Miss Joyce Goodwin (2) and; Miss P. Murray, and for Inglewood bv Miss C. Devereaux. I In the men’s match Inglewood had Hawera hard on the defensive in the first spell. They maintained the pressure and R. Crossman scored a goal shortly after the change over. Little separated the five entrants for the first 200 yards, but then Blyth gradually drew away until with almost half the distance covered he had a lead of half a length from Ryan.
