MODEL GARDEN DISPLAY

HAW-ERA WOMEN’S CIA B

ANNUAL SHOW FEATURE.

The annual show of flowers, shrubs and blooms, held by the gardening circle of the Haw-era, Women’s Club, took a novel form this year and featured a model garden. The opening day yesterday drew a very satisfactory attendance, nearly a hundred visiting the show.

The model is a miniature of a “laj out’ for a fairly large area of garden It combines in a small space of about 40 feet by 20 feet the features de sired in the garden. It is laid out on the lawn, inside a marquee and has been the object of much interest At the further end is a wicket gate with arch covered in climbing roses and on either side is a bed of cinerarias, hy drangeas, portulaceas and flowers oi those species. In the centre is a littlepiece of rock garden planted with van eties suited to this class of gardening and with a climbing pillar of native ferns. Round the garden is a cuony inns hedge and a border of iee plants. In the next beds are ornamental shrubs and a cupressus -at each coiner of several varieties and the end is a native section with floor of the forest, pungas and treelets and ferns, all nicely arranged. Above the garden are a. number of hanging ferns, maid enhair chiefly, in baskets, adding a touch of coolness.

A novel feature is a desert garden in miniature, about 14 inches square This is made of stones and brokei. rock and planted with a large variety of cacti over forty in that small spac*. Along one side is a line of bamboos lending an air of waving beauty and suppleness to that corner. The decorative section of the show is also housed in the marquee and makes a. very bright and effective display. Alongside is a bridal table da in tily set and a series of costumes, suit able for such occasions and ornament od with bouquets. The judges were Mrs C. H.
