RESOURCE SHOWN BY GIRL
AID TO INJURED DRIVER. SMASH OF MOTOR LORRY. WANGANUI, Nov. 30. Courage and resource to a high degree were displayed by a 16-year-old girl, Miss Thelma Durling, of Ohakune, in an accident on the Parapara Road yesterday afternoon. Miss Durling was travelling to Wanganui from Ohakune on a lorry laden with wool, driven by Mr Gordon Smith, aged 21. When in the vicinity of Kakatahi the lorry got out of control and plunged over a precipitous bank. Miss Durling was fortunate enough to escape serious injury, but the driver was rendered unconscious, and suffered lacerations to his arms. The girl managed to stop & dangerous flow of blood from a wound, and get the injured man to the roadway. Assistance was forthcoming from settlers and Mr A. W. Allen, of Hastings, who was returning from a motor trip to Auckland. The driver of the lorry was conveyed to the Wanganui Hospital in Mr Allen’s car, and an operation was performed. Miss Durling was found to be suffering from abrasions and shock. “Miss Durling acted like a Briton,” said Mr Allen, in extolling her couri age. “Her presence of mind cannot 'be too highly commended,” he added. On inquiry at the hospital to-day it was ascertained that the condition of both was satisfactory. It was Miss Durling’s intention to sit for the matriculation examination which commences in Wanganui to-morrow.
