BULLER BY-ELECTION
ATTITUDE OF INDEPENDENT. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. 9. According to the Westport correspondent of the “Christchurch Star,” a sensational turn was given to the contest for the Buller seat when last night, at the conclusion, of a meeting which Mr R. Semple, M.P., addressed in -support of the candidature of Mr P. C. Webb, Mr lan Simpson, the Independent candidate, seconded a motion expressing confidence in the Labour Party and Mr Webb. The two candidates thpn shook bands. A furtlf: r seinsation was caused by the announcement that Mr Simpson would 1 leave on Saturday to speak in the Town Hall, Wellington on Monday bii exchange, the sales tax, the unemployment tax and -the central bank scheme. He has challenged the R-t. Hon. J. G. Coates and Sir Henry Buckleton to discuss these questions, and says that if he fails to gain the verdict of the audience he will resign in favour of Mr Webb for the Buller seat.
