THE SHOW
LATE EDITION
PEOPLE’S DAY FEATURES AFTERNOON ATTRACTIONS OPENING BY MINISTER GRAND PARADE OF STOCK. With the crowd steadily increasing from mid-day, it was estimated that the attendance at the Egmont juib’.lee show this afternoon would approach a record for the fixture. Ideal weather continued and the attendance of country residents was probably + -lj@ best for some years. Principal events this afternoon were military competitions, the grand parade of stock, steer riding, ring, events and Highland dancing, while judging was continued in some sections, particular interest ’being taken in the bovs and scuds' calf classes.
The show was officially opened by the Minister of Lands (the Hon. El. A. Ransom' who was introduced by the show president (Mr A. Hunter). Mr Ransom said he was very pleased to have had the honour of being at the association’s jubilee show and he congratulated both the association and the people of the district upon its success. He also desired to apologise for the absence of the Prime Minister, who was unable to 'be present on account of urgent engagements, and the Minister of Agriculture, whose presence was also necessary in t\>e House. Mr Ransom said he had visited many shows throughout the Dominion, and he was particularly pleased with the exhibition at llawera. What was most striking to a stranger was the wonderful exhibition of pigs, which was one of the most outstanding he had seen. He believed there were great possibilities in the pig export trade and he would like to see a more active interest taken in it bv the producers. The value of such a trade was shown in Denmark’s exports of pig products, which alone were really as valuable as our dairy produce exports. Referring to the steady increase in primary production during the past season the Minister said that although some might be anxious for the future of the industry with a continued increase, ho did “not think foi* one moment that the farmers would agree to any curtailment of production. The offer made to the association by Air W. J. Arundel for the reduction of the mortgage on the o-rounds was also referred to by Mr Ransom, the Minister remarking that he was sure the people of the district would rise to the occasion and place the association on a firm footing, clear of debt. (Applause).
