KOPUTAROA TEAM UNBEATEN. MANAIA A RUNNERS-UP There was an approximate attendance of 400 at the showgrounds last evening, when the jubilee tug-of-war was contested and a short programme of athletic events. The Haweira Municipal Band was in attendance and rendered an appreciated series of selections. Five teams took part in the jubilee tug-of-war tournament. Each team had trio “lives” arid Koputaroa, the lightest team to enter, emerged from the final! against, Manaia A with an unbeaten record.
Russell’s patent electric indicator’ writs used for the pulls and intense excitement prevailed among spectators as first a red light and then an amber light shone to indicate the position of the respective teams on the board. Altogether four rounds were necessary and from these Koputaroa. and Manaia A emerged with their trie “lives” intact. Koputaroa won the first of two final pulls by two inches, and after changing ends with their opponents as agreed the visitors from Horowhenua district also v;on the final pull and the tournament by four inches. Detailed (results of pulls were as follow : First round.—Manaia B beat Normanby by two inches; Koputaroa drew with Manaia A in a pull which tihe judge declared was the closest in his experience over a long period of years. Second round. Normanby Dairy Company heat Normanby by five inches ; Koputaroa heat Manaia B by one inch. Third round.—Koputaroa beat Normanby Dairy Company by half an inch on the call of time; Manaia A beat Manaia B by five and a half inches. Fourth round .—Koputaroa. beat Normanby Dairy Company by two inches; Manaia A, a bye. First final.—Koputaroa (two lives) beat Manaia A (two lives) by two inches.
Final.—Koputaroa (two lives) beat Manaia A (one life) by four inches. Officials in charge of the tournament included Messrs J. Rfussell (Manaia) judge; A. W. Russell (ELtham) starter; W. A.
