HEART STARTED AGAIN
FIGHT FOR CHILD’S LIFE. Remarkable evidence of how doctors fought for the life of a 10-year-old girl and restored the action of her heart for a time, was given at an inquest at West Ham, London, lately. The child, Eileen Elsie Crittenden, daughter of a railway porter, was undergoing an operation in St Mary’s Hospital, Plaistow. Dr. Lewis, of St. Mary’s Hospital, stated that the child was in a weak condition, and was given a light anaesthetic of gas and oxygen. Her heart stopped beating, and adrenalin was injected. Artificial respiration and an injection of strychnine were also tried The adrenalin was given straight through the chest into the heart muscle, but this was not successful. The surgeon then made an incision straight to the heart and also applied massage with his hands.
The heart started to beat, first of all faintly, and then it gained in strength The child drew either one or two breaths during this time. She was men taken down from the operating theatre to her bed, and received oxygen all the way down. Her pulse was still going when she reached the ward, hut then it stopped. The surgeon tried to massage her, but this time it was unsuccessful.
