SOUTH TARANAKI CRICKET

PROGRESS OF COMPETITION OLD BOYS DEFEAT KAPONGA. STRATFORD A BEATS JIAWERA A DAY OF MODERATE SCORES The South Taranaki cricket competition. was advanced a further stage on Saturday. O'ld Boys and Stratford both, scored victories in the A grade, while Opunake maintained its unbeaten record in the B grade. . An outstanding feature of the play at Hawera was the bowling, with a hat trick included, of Pritchard, of Old Boys. The Stratford-Hawera match was marked by Hall’s fine score of 50 unbeaten, at a time when runs were bacllv needed by his side. H. Barker and Moloney also gave Old Boys a very fine start by scoring 100 between them for the first wicket. In the B grade Francis, of Stratford, by getting nine wickets for 21 runs just failed to join the band of 'those who have taken all wickets in an innings. Excellent figures, too, were secured by Nelson, of Manaia.

Manaia 80 v. Old Collegians 15. Stratford T.H.S. 17S v. Hawera B IQ. STRATFORD A BEATS HAWERA A. HALL’S PLUCKY INNINGS WINNERS HAVE ONE WICKET IN HAND' The Hawera A| team travelled to Stratford to play its second fixture with the local A team and was again beaten, but by ai small margin. At drawing of stumps the winners had lost nine wickets' and were ten run(s to the good. A feature of the match was the plucky innings of Hall, who just reached the half-century at call of time. During his innings he suffered a blow from the ball in the face and, after a short spell, he continued to play and it was to him largely that Stratford owe its success. His display was his best for some time. Shaw (22), Giblin (21), Warnes (18) and Penny (14) scored most of the runs for Hawera. The best, partnerships were those for the second, the seventh, eighth and ninth wickets. Shaw' had bad luck in being run out just as he was going well and 1 looked set for a. good score. Stratford opened fairly well, the first four batsmen all making runs and shaping confidently. After Walker went Hall found no one to stay with him until Wilson went in and 42 were added while they were together. Hall was steady throughout but reached his fifty with a fine six. He and Fritter were- together, unbeaten, when stumps were drawn. Details of scores are- -

OLD BOYS WIN AGAIN. KAPONGA DECISIVELY BEATEN. TWO GOOD OPENING PARTNERSHIPS. An extraordinary collapse was seen in the Kaponga batting after a remarkably confident opening. After having 67 on the board before S. Betts was bowled, a rot set in and the whole side was out for 85. S'. Betts anci Court played the first four bowlers confidently and runs came steadily, though somewhat slowly, and it was when Pritchard went on at the south end that the collapse began. He was keeping a capital length and had the batsmen tied up at once. After two overs he got Betts with a fine ball and then Court went l.b.w. Dormer fell to Sturrock for l.b.w. and then Pritchard created a sensation bv getting four wickets in one over—a hat trick with the last three balls, and he wound up with the extraordinary average of six wickets for four runs. Sturrock got the last three very cheaply. The team actually scored onlv 65 from the bat. Mr “Extras’’ adding a solid 20. Old Boys were without W. Barker and missed him behind the stumps. H. Barker and Moloney made a great stand for Old Bovs and between them put on exactly 100 runs. Molonev was the first to go after a bright 32. falling to a good ball from Dormer, who was turning the ball well. Four wickets then fell cheaolv and little addition was made until Pritchard came in and rattled up 14 quickly. Barker then went to drive Dormer and. missing, was clean bowled and stumps were drawn when seven wickets had fallen for 137. Details of scores are:
