HAWERA TENNIS CLUB
SEASON OFFICIALLY OPENED
MANY VISITORS ENTERTAINED.
At the official opening of the Hawera Lawn Tennis Club s 1933-34 sea- - son in Saturday (reported briefly in Saturday’s late edition of the ‘‘Hawera Star”) the president (Mr Rod Synie) gave 'a cordial welcome to a large number of visitors and expressed the hope that all had had ah enjoyable afternoon. The oourts were in fine order and he was confident that the season would be highly successful. Among the visitors were members of clubs at Manaia, Mokoia., Meremere, Patea and New Plymouth. Mr R. H. Leeae, member of tl;e executive of Taranaki and Dominion Lawn Tennis - Association, was present and expressed pleasure at the attendance of so many members .and their friends for the opening day. He wished the club every success m its activities during the season. Mr Leece gave some of his impressions of the visiting English players and said that they were per.onally a, very fine lot of men and brilliant exponents of the game. He had thoroughly enjoyed meeting them and seeing them in action and was •confident that the visit would give a fillip to the gamie everywhere in New Zealand. Concluding his remarks Mr Lec*ce formally declared the courts open for play. Afternoon tea was served at the pavilion by the ladies. Duiinor the afternoon a Yankee tournament was played and’ the winners were Mrs Walkley and Mrs Langdon among the ladies and Messrs I. Wvlds and Hugh Jones among the men. Among the visitors were Mrs A. Adams, New Zealand champion in the doubles, with Mrs Dykes, Miss Inez Small, Dominion junior champion, and Miss B. Howe, a leading member of Brougham Hill Club, in Wellington. All three now reside in Eltham and will play for the Eltham club. Among the spectators was Mr H. Wood, of Rawmtiroa, who for many vears has been an enthusiastic active member of the Eltham Club. He was unable to play because of a recent illness. Mr Wood saw the English players ,at New Plymouth and he said of their play that their all-roundability, their powers of recovery of difficult shots, their speed and accurate placing and above all, perhaps, their gift of anticipation of the tactics of their opponents, were some mosj) outstanding features. It was, he said, a privilege to get them to play in Taranaki and their appearance at New Plymouth had drawn players from all parts of the province. PARK CLUB. Challenge matches played by members of the Park (Hawera) Tennis Club during the week resulted as follow: E. Reid challenged E. G. Bell for first position and won 6 —4, 6—l. F. Bernard won from E. Yearbury by default for third position. Claringbold clial!en°'ed L. Hulbert for 10th position and won 9—5. C. Wylds challenged S. A. Shahlers for 16tli position' and T-on 9—4 . Miss M. Dvmond challenged Mrs E. Hcdder for third position and won 6—3 4—6. 6—3. The stars were won bv Claringbold and Miss F. Campbell.
PARK WEDNESDAY TEAM. The Hawera Park tennis team to nlav Matnpn at Matapu on Wednesday will be: Hodder. Snowsill. Lay (2), Mrs Dvmond. Miss Dymond, Miss F. AVyfckin.
