ALLEGED CAR CONVERSION
DRIVER WITHOUT LICENSE HAWERA COURT CHARGES • Before Mpssrs G. H. Buclseridge and J M. Townsend, J’s.P., in the Hawera Court this morning a young man named Albeit Powell, a labourer without fixed address, was charged by the police with conversion of a motor car at Normanby on November 4. He was also charged with driving a car without holding a license. He pleaded not guilty to the former charge and guilty on the second. He was remanded to appear at New Plymouth on November 13 on the conversion charge and fined 10s and costs 3s on the other count. Sergeant Henry said that accused had been found by Constable Pidgeon on the road near Normanby after midnight carrying a tin which lie said contained benzine and was taking to his car, which had run out of petrol. The constable questioned him and, after telephoning Waitara for information about the ownership of the car, had 1 arrested accused oil the charge of conversion of the car. He had no driver’s license but stated that lie previously had had one. On the charge of driving without a license lie was fined 10s and was given 14 days in which to pay. Accused said he could not arrange bnil and was consequently sent in custody to New Plymouth to appear there on the conversion charge.
