HOUSEHOLD HINTS
IDEAS IN THE HOME. TAUGHT BY EXPERIENCE. Place several layer-s ot newspapers under your floor covering. Then, no matter how irregular the boards ol the floor may be, they cannot harm the backs of the rugs or carpet. The papers also give a much softer feeling when one is walking on the rugs, and are a preventive against moths. To brighten paint or vagnish on doors or woodwork, use a little boiled linseed oil, rubbed on with a clean rag and then polished with a soft duster. This also is an easy method of renovating leather. Fruit salad should be made several hours before it is wanted, to give the flavours time to blend. Pour very hot lemon and water over the fruit to stimulate the flowing of the juices. A teaspoonful of vinegar put into a pan in which fish has been fried will remove all trace of fishiness. Iron moulds stains on washable materials may be treated by rubbing with a piece of lemon dipped in salt. Immerse the stained material at once in boiling water to which a little ammonia has been added. Rinse in clear warm water and hang in the open air for several hours. To repair torn lace curtains, tack tissue paper over the hole and, after slackening the tension of the sewing machine, cover the paper with rows of stitching a little w T ay apart, working down and across in the manner of a darn. This will form a strong mesh, and when the paper is torn away and the curtains ironed and hung, the “darns” will be hardly discernible.
New clothes pegs often split vety easily .but if they are soaked in water a few r hours before they are used it will prevent them from doing so. To prevent anything sticking to the saucepan when it is boiling or the trouble of stirring, put a marble in the saucepan. To prevent a cooked custard becoming watery, warm the milk before adding the eggs.
