ELERSLIE TRACK WORK
CUP CANDIDATES’ FORM CARFEX’S SMART GALLOP. TRY-OUT WITH RED «UN. c IS# Tc<e(jr»>pli —Press Association.} AUCKLAND, Nov. 2. Fine weather prevailed for the final gallops at Ellerslic this morning. * The course proper, -with • the poles about 30ft. out, was open for fast work. The going was excellent. Spiral and Hawthorn opened proceedings and were sent over six furlongs in 1.20, the first three taking. •30 4-osec. Hawthorn was eased in the straight and Spiral was a number of 'eng, ths in front at the finish. The Mitchelson Cup candidates Oart'ex and Red Sun, with Senegal, jumpid away at the mile posit. The Jastlanicd was in front for over half the journey, where Carfex and 'Red Sun moved up, Carfex eventually finishing over a length ahead of Red Sun, with Senegal several lengths away. The .irst four furlongs took 51 1-5, and the Pull distance in 1.45 3-5. It was a good gallop, with Carfex going particularly well at the finish, though Red Sun, wha was on the outside, also did liis work impressively. Whenuakura, after running his first couple of furlongs in 24 3-sscc, reeled off half a mile in 50 3-ssee. He went from the mile to the half-mile post and lid his work attractively.
Pomp jumped away at tlie five furlong post, running the first two furlongs in 25sec and the complete task in 1.5 3-5. He was running on solidly at ;he finish and is in great heart. View Halloo, Lord Val and All Humbug were associated. The first half of i mile took 52 l-ssee and the full distance 1.401-5. View Ilaloo was in [front at the end and was doing his work very impressively. Lord Val was about two lengths away, a length in front of All Humbug. The last-named got his tongue over the bit, which would probably account for his failure to make a better showing. Porotiti had Chief Cook as companion over six furlongs, the first three taking 3!) l-ssec and the full distance 1.1 y. They were together at the finish, though Porotiti, on !the outside, appeared to be doing the better. Chief Cook also did a solid trial.
The two-year-old (Mother Superior was sprinted half a mile, going from the mile to the four furlongs post. She ran the first two furlongs in 24 3-5 and completed the task in 50 4-5. After breakfast Kiltowyn gave Jewelled Girdle several lengths break at the six furlongs post and was a shade in front at the finish in 1.18 3-5. Kiltowyn’s performance was a good one, as he was eoneeding the other horse a lot of weight. However, the track was a bit faster after the interval.
The Guineas candidate King Musk worked easily over a mile, running the distance in 1.52 1-5.
Baroscope worked over a round but did not have much pace on till the last five furlongs, which he covered in 1.5 2- Barograph assisted him over the three furlongs, traversed in 38 3- Baroscope worked exceptionally well.
The two-year-olds Bed Flame, 'Seven Seas and Sporting Song ran home in that order from tlie three furlong post in 3Ssee. Bed Flame, who has done well lately, put plenty of dash into his work.
'Count Lendroff (M. Jennings) went away near the mile post and jumped tlie two fences on the hill and the stonewall at the foot, being then pulled on to The course proper. He gave a first-class display. Riotous (C. Thomson), Patutahi
(Burgess) and Ruawai (I. Tucker) were associated m a round of the steeplechase course. They commenced at the sod wall ami after jumping the fences on the Halt continued up the 'hill. Pat ut alii. was pulled off at the top of the straight, the other pair again going, over the fences on the Halt. Riotous, who was having his first experience over the Ellerslic country, gave a fine exhibition, and Patutahi also fenced satisfactorily. Ruawai, who was some distance back at the finish, hilt the last obstacle, the stonewall, and dislodged his rider. The arrivals this morning were iSea Fox, Davistoek, Aga Khan and Diagano. The inside of the grass was open for fast work at- Takanini, the going being excellent. Exaggeration appeared to be doing a shade better than Greek Gold at the end of five furlongs. Both horses are in excellent order.
Iving March jumped away in advance of "Specdmint at the mile post, but It.ho latter quickly assumed command and was not troubled to win by a couple of lengths in 1.48 4-5. Speedmint worked well and was no,t extended. King March’s effort was very disappointing. Alignment completed an easy six furlongs in 1.10 3-5. Cay Sheila and Cay Marigold were companions over five furlongs in 1.3 4-5. Gay Sheila was too good and was going very easily aJt the finish. Seratehings are:— Flying Handicap: Lord Val (11.5 a.m.). Mitchelson Cup: Lord Val (4.T5 p.m.), Cold Trail. (0 a.zn.), Havering (1 p.m.),

Thespis, the topweiglit in the Trial Hurdles, lias not raced for some time and may not be at liis best. Unoco should show improvement on liis Paeroa form. Riotous won at his last attempt and will be one of the hardest to beat. Valpeen and Glenade look capable and the trio favoured by bettors may be Riotous, Valpeen and Glenade.
GREAT NORTHERN GUINEAS Of £750. One mile.
Gay Sheila, is the ruling favourite for the Great Northern Guineas, for which race there will be several defections, but a solid field is assured. goration, and L’Allegro will all go a merry pace. 11l the absence of Ponotiti tlie public may select Exaggeration, Puss Moth and L’Allegro. MITOHIELSON GUP. Of £7OO. One mile and a half.
King’.s Knave won the Avondale Cup in great style and may be expected to be improved, as his victory at Paeroa under 11.2 suggests. View Halloo ran good races and ran third in this race last year. Havering does not. appear to be in. the racing condition necessary. Speedmint has been showing good form and finished' in good style in the Avondale Cup. The extra distance may not be in favour of All Humbug, who won the Waverley Cup. He meets King’s Knave oil 7.1 b better terms than when he finished second to that horse in the Avondale Cup.' Red Sun is a much discussed candidate, who has proved himself over the mile and a half at Ellersslie. Carfex should be improved by his racing at Avondale and may be expected to run a good race. Prince Val must be taken into consideration and Baroscope-will he a fancied lightweight. Royal Artist is well handicapped, as lie wori the race last year with six pounds less and won a." Wellington Oup. King March has been disapointing. In a race full of possibilities, the public may show preference for King’s Knave, Carfex and Royal Artist. •• * • *HU NTEiRS’ STBEPLECHA SE. Of £2OO.
