REFUSE TO MOVE
WORKERS IN RELIEF CAMP SPIRITED' LABOUR. PROTEST GISBORNE, Oct. 30. Ai number of men residing at Bartlett’s camp, which is a. relic of railway construction work, have refused to accept employment in other parts of the district, which would involve separation from their wives and families, and iu consequence have been refused other work by the Unemployment. Board. A strong protest against this action has been made to the Minister of Employment, the lion’. A. Hamilton, by the Gisborne branch of the Labour Party in a letter which states that these men are refused relief for resisting the attempt to separate them from their families.
“Whv is your department blind to he necessities of these people who, through no fault of their own, are beggars in their own district P” the letter asks. “There is no question of the unreasonableness of the demand that these men should be sent away from home .o chance eking out existence under primitive, camp conditions. Surely your department must see the danger of driving these men to desperation. They aave proved their courage by refusing ;o accept such impossible conditions. VVe appeal to yon to take tins matter up and see that these men are given a •banco to earn a decent standard living vithiu a reasonable distance of their iiimes. ’’
