ASSAULT ON WIFE

THREE YEARS’ DETENTION. “NOT FIT TO BE AT LIBERTY.” (By Telegraph—Press Association.) AUCKLAND. Nov. 1. John Shaw Gordon, found guilty of assaulting his wife so as to cause bodily harm, and of attempting to commit suicide, was sentenced to-day to three years’ reformative detention. Mr. Justice Smith said he was not satisfied that laecused' and his wife were living happily, and he suspected there were motives for the man’s actions There was no proof of insanity, though perhaps his action was queer. He was not a lit subject to be at liberty. It was difficult to impose a sentence on a man of 68 when lie had never before been before the court, but it was clear that he might be a danger to his wife, and he had expressed no regret.
