UNPROFITABLE PRODUCTION

SAMOAN PLANTERS’ DIFFICULTIES. HEAVY SLUMP IN OOPRiA PRICES / ____ (By Telegraph—Pros* Association.) WELLINGTON, Oct. 31. The Samoan correspondent of the United Press Association, writing from Apia on October 19, says that the price of copra is down to £3 per ton to European planters, while the natives are receiving less. The natives are not cutting copra on account of the low prices. _ Cocoa is down to £35 per ton, which leaves practically no margin to the planter. Bananas are helping the situation to some extent, but a greater benefit would be experienced if a largely increased quanitity could be shipped.
