JUDGES TO BE TRIED
ARREST OF EIGHT RUSSIANS. NEGLECT OF INSTRUCTIONS. (United Pre«s Association—By Electric Telegraph Copyright.) LONDON, Oct. 30. The Riga correspondent of “The Times” states that the Soviet has ordered the arrest and trial of eight judges in the Urals for an alleged offence unique in Russian annals. Tlie judges, regardless of whether the accused were guilty or innocent, allegedly lengthily sentenced engineers and ■specialists,' thereby ignoring the Government’s’ directions. Apparently the judges were unable to keep pace with thg zig-zag policy of justice and applied earlier instructions instead of altering the indictments to permit milder sentences as required from Moscow, the correspondent adds. Many improper sentences have now been quashed. Thirty judges and court officials at Minsk are undergoing trial for allegedly passing over-mild sentences in consideration of bribes, for which the penalty is death.
