WASHINGTON, Oct. 18. Although farm prices ‘have increased by 35 per cent, against the average for the year ended in March, it is understood President Rloosevelt feels they are nor- yet high enough. Figures have also been submitted showing that factory employment in September, compared with 1929, had recovered 4Q per cent, of its decline and the income of factory workers had regained a quarter of the loss, while living costs rose nine per cent, for March to September of 1933. The N.R.A. offices were to-day advancing plans for the enforcement of President Roosevelt’s order regarding violators. High officials of the automobile industry failed to appear at a hearing to-day before the National Labour Board on the toll and die makers’ strike. It is understood they declined to come, declaring that no N.R.A. code question was involved. Mr Alvin, MacAulay, head of the National Automobile Chamber of Commerce, as well as Packard Motors, and Mr William Knud, sen, executive vice-president of General Motors, have been called. Both are understood to have sent refusals by telegram. The employing groups contended that no question of arbitration, has arisen since the workers of Flint and Pet-riot returned to their jobs. The opposing group stated that 17,000 were still striking. The strike in the collieries of the Hudson Coal Company, Pennsylvania anthracite area, called some weeks ago, to-day spread to include 20,000 workers in. the whole field.
