“SERVICE FOR OTHERS”

REV. FIELDEN TAYLOR’S ADDRESS. VISIT TO HAWERA CHURCH. An appeal for a spirit of service for others and help for those in need was made by the Rev. T. Fielden Taylor, City Missioner in Wellington, when, at St. Mary’s Church, Hawera, last evening fie preached from the text, “We that are strong ought to bear the infirmities of the weak.” The church was crowded.

“Life,” said the preacher in his opening remarks, “is a great thing and it should be a sheer joy to he alive, but life should he an opportunity for the ministry of service. Everything in life renders some service, and when it cannot do so it is or should be scrapped. The history of man is the gradual discovery of value *• in the things around him. Man is a great user, and each one should be always striving to see how he can extract some goodness from others.” He said that this was the gospel of Jesus Christ, an unique figure in the world’s history for 2000 years, and’ everyone should try to find the secret pf His life and influence. The whole life of Christ was one long ministry of service, to feed the hungry and" to heal the sick, and He spent His whole life in giving. At last Christ gave His life “for you and’ for me,” and died on the Cross in • the splendour of His young manhood. The preacher stressed the need for a new purpose and a higher ideal in life, and none was greater than that of Christ. Everyone should endeavour to be like Him and be living His life, looking after the hungry, the sick and the needy, who will always be in the world. A man could always find someone who needed something he himself had, and the question should always be “What can I give you?” “Service is the only fulfilment of life’s purpose,” said the preacheiv—“You will always find you can give something if you will, and you should catch the idea that you who are strong in mind, in soul and in body should; always strive to help those who are weaker and so have ioy in doing good in your life.”
