EGMONT ALPINE CLUB
SKIIERS ON THE MOUNTAIN.
ASCENT OF MAIN PEAK
Although no official trip had been arranged several members of the Mount Egmont Alpine Club spent the week-end at Dawson Falls with Mr W. C. Mace, of Wellington, wellknown New Zealand' alpinist and a member of the New Zealand Alpine Club. On Sunday two parties left the falls hostel in glorious weather and spent the day skiing, one party ascending to the top of Fantham’s Peak and the other to the head of the Ivaupokonui Gorge. Conditions for the sport were ideal. A rather heavy fall of snow during the week left a deep mantle well down the mountain slopes, thus checking the rapid thaw that had set in as a result of the recent mild weather. On Fantham’s Peak the visitors found Syrne Hut “snowed up” to the eaves, and the interior dry and in excellent order. Accompanied by Mr R. Syme, captain of the Mount Egmont Alpine Club, Mr Mace made an ascent of the main peak. Excellent climbing conditions were met with until the weather changed and visibility was almost entirely obscured by heavy mist which swirled up from lower levels. The climbers reached the peak, and on the downward journey had occasion to use their original steps formed in the snow.
An official trip by club members will take place during the coming weekend. when there will be skiing and climbing. An endeavour will be made to take up all the skiis required for the Fantham’s Peak ski season, which lasts until early in December. Weather permitting, the Taranaki ski championships will be held 1 during Labour Day week-end and the Egmont Club championships on November 12.
