The death of the Rev. D. D. Rodger, Presbyterian minister, at the a,ge ol 78 years, is reported in a Press Association message from Auckland.

Gifts to the Hawera Public Hospital during the month of -September are acknowledged by the matron .(Miss C. blunter) as follow: Books and magazines, Miss Lysaght, Mrs A. Horner, 31. Simpson and R. Pierce; old linen, 3li*s Hannah, Mrs. Harding and “anonymous”; flowers, Mcs dames Lee, Larcom, Johnson, Bennett, Harding and Church of England (per the Rev. H. Whitby James); Micky Mouse birthday cake for the children from Micky Mouse (Opera House) Club.

Relief work for this week was allocated to 139 Hawera. registered unemployed—ll A class men, 85 B and 43 C class men—compared with 146 last week. For the week ended September 23 a total of 149 men were assisted, and the previous week 132 men were given work.

There are not many returns so far of the success of the anglers of the South Taranaki district for the opening day of the season, but, although nothing sensational is recorded, all are reported to have had a. good day’s sport. The best tally recorded was that of Messrs Lemm, Thomason, Hostick and Buekworth, of Hawera, who had among them a total of fourteen nice fish. The fish taken, though none are very large, are in particularly fine condition and the marking is specially good. Two that came to the office of the president of the Hawera Acclimatisation Society (Mr. B. C. Bennett) to-day were excellent specimens of the brown trout.

“Some people would say that if your child has no music in him you should not set him to learn any instrument,” remarked Mr Ronald Chamberlain, examiner for the- Trinity College of Music, when speaking; at a. concert given by the Christchurch centre. “If, howover, you feel that ho or she must learn something, do, for the sake of the neighbours, put him to an ’instrument with a constant pitch like the piano rather than the violin. Then he will do less damage to the ears and nerves next door.”
