SILK’S WANGANUI TITLE

DALE (ELTHAM) RUNNER-UP,

BRILLIANT PLAY IN FINAL. In a remarkable display of golf on Saturday Brvan Silk, of Wanganui, won the Wanganui Club cliammonship, beating H. Dale, of Eltham, 5 up and 3to play. „ . , The standard of the golf against which Dale had to contend may be gathered from the figures returned by Silk, though it must be remembered that they could not count in an attempt on the course record of 70. On the outward journey Silk reeled off a long string of fours, with a three at Seaview, the short fifth. In the six holes played on the homeward journey Silk commenced with a 2, followed that with four fours in succession, and settled the argument with an orthodox 3 at French Pass. It will be noted that he took four at the short twelfth, where he failed to get out of a hunker. He arid Dale finished the round for Silk to record 33, making his total for the 18 holes 68. Silk earlv established a substantial lead and though Dale made a good attempt to wrest the lead from him he was unable to do so. After being three no at the turn, six holes being halved, Silk won the next two. lost the 12th, and' halving the next two was dorniie four The end came at the loth, where -Silk won in three to Dale’s four and secured the match and chanuponshio, 5 up and 3 to play. Gordon beat Meyer in the final of the Hawera Golf Club’s limit championship, played over 36 _ holes, by 3 and 1. Gordon did a 96 in the morning and was- 2 up. a lead he held m the afternoon until the 17th green. He did a 97 in the afternoon. Meyer made a good fighting finish.

ELTHAM TO PLAY SUMMER. GOLF

The Eltham Golf Club decided on Friday to play golf during the summer. The president, Mr L. Quin, -said there were several promising young players coming on. and he thought summer play would help. them'. The motion was carried unanimously and the fee for summer nlay was fixed at £1 Is. this to apply'also to members of other clubs. It was decided that the present mower be used to cut the fairways and that a new light mower be obtained to cut the greens. Messrs A. A. Stewart and J. D. McKay were appointed to enrol members.

N. HUNGER MEN’S CHAMPION.

In' the final of the men’s senior championship N, Hunger Avon from G. Eraser, 7 and 6. These two players met in the final of the Remeura Cup, avlion the position was reversed. Hunger, who -is a handicap 6 man, played a 79 for the first IS holes. Fraser (handicap S) failed Avith his putting. Hunger Avas 4 up at the end of the first IS. LADIES’ CHAMPIONSHIP. Several’ finals in the- club championships have beeir played during the past few days. On Friday Miss Hurley and and Miss Nina Hurley played the senior ladies’ final, the latter winning from Miss Kate Hurley, 3 and 2. In the semi-final of the C grade championship Miss B. Petersen 1 won from Miss V. Sheild, 5 and 4, and will meet Mrs Mitchell in the final.

Miss Iv. Hurley made a further reduction in her handicap on Saturday, bringing it doAA’n to- 7. It was’ only on Wednesday that she reduced from 10 to 9, and ‘now on Saturday she played the excellent round of 85 for 18 holes. Mrs Mitchell gained her first handicap, eomin'g doAvn to 35.
