LORD RANFURLY DEAD

FORMER. N.Z. GOVERNOR. DONOR OF RUGBY SHIELD. (United Press Association —By Electric j -legraplCopy right.) LONDON, Oct, 1. The death has occurred of the Earl of Ban.furly, former Governor-General of New Zealand. His age was 77 years. The fifth Earl of Eanfurly, Walter John. Mark Knox, was bom on August 14, 1856, being the youngest son of the third earl. He was educated at Harrow and Gamfbridge, and, after bieng Lord-ih-Waiting to. Queen Victoria from 1895-97, was created Governor and Commander- in-Ohief off New Zealand, remaining in this country from 1897 to 1904. He was a Privy Councillor, and was awarded the Order of G.C.M.G. in 1901. His name is commemorated in New Zealand by the Eanfurly Shield, the emblem of provincial Rugby supremacy, which he presented fo.r competition.
