INFANT BOY DROWNED
FALL. INTO SWIFT RIVER. TRAGEDY -IN HAWKE’S BAY. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) HASTINGS, Oct. 1. A drowning fatality occurred at Haumoana, seven miles from Hastings, at 4 o’clock on .Saturday afternoon, when William Kershaw, aged three, lost his life. The boy was visiting the beach with his parents and four other children and was playing at the mouth of the Tukituki River when a large wave was. seen approaching. Some fishermen nearby shouted a warning fo the child. He stepped back to avoid the wave and fell into the mouth of the river, -which was running very swiftly. A man jumped in to save the boy, but his efforts were of no avail, the child being swept past him. Search parties scoured the beach until 10 o’clock on Saturday night, when the body was found a mile from the mouth of the river.
