LOCAL AND PERSONAL

Nurslts Wilkinson hasi returned to Hawera from Auckland accompanied by M is® Howard.

Amusing reference to the changed custom of Maori women of 30 or 40 last 50 yeans was made by the Rev. R. P. R-akena, when speaking yesterday at the celebrations in connection with the Okaiawa sehooL’s golden jubilee. From the pakeha the, Maori had learned many things, both good and bad, he said. In the olden days it was the custo mof Maori women of 30 or 40 to tattoo their lips to rejuvenate their apepairanee. To-day the Maori maidens went to the chemist’® shop and obtained powder to stimulate their beauty. “That is education,” he said. Anglers in the district have been busy during the past week getting all their gear ready for the opening of the 1933 season, which will begin tomorrow. The prospects are that the season will be one of the best. The secretary of the Hawera Acclimatisation Society (Mr R, A. Graham) con - siders that the conditions, are better than he has seen for many years—a good winter without much wind and a recent fresh, after which fish are on the alert and are looking for feed. If the weather continues favourable over the week-end the opening should be particularly good and substantial creels should be taken. The demand for licenses has been very strong : nd included in the list of purchasers are many new names, an indication that the sport is spreading.
